Melbourne, the second largest city in Australia, is a very attractive and well planned metropolis of more than 4 million people. It has a mixture of modern high rise buildings and historic terrace houses with some from the time of the gold rush. One of Melbourne’s attractions lies in the fact that most of the interesting sites are close together, mostly within the CBD (Central Business District) which covers an area of approximately 1 kilometre by 2.5 kilometres. It lends itself to be discovered on foot. The extensive public transport consists of a metropolitan railway network, electric trams and buses and is ideally suited to cover longer distances during the tour. Among the many attractions of Melbourne are well planned and well maintained parks, grand boulevards, a central shopping area with a great variety of shops and beautiful arcades, an elegant river promenade and the close proximity of the ocean with sandy beaches and beach suburbs with wide beach promenades. The atmosphere is relaxed, traffic not as hectic as in other big cities and the population friendly and helpful.
Among the attractions we are likely to see during our tour are the Flinders Street Railway Station, Federation Square, Princess Bridge over the river Yarra, the two greatest cathedrals of Victoria St Paul’s and St Patrick’s, interesting malls and alleyways with modern street art, arcades which remind of Europe, shopping malls, the Paris end of Collins Street, stunning architecture of the 19th century, beautifully presented parks, Cooks Cottage, the famous gothic bank and finally modern Southbank south of the river Yarra and opposite the CBD with a relaxed river promenade. We walk as fast as you please. On our way we have a coffee break (included in price) which would allow us to discuss our experience and answer questions. I also offer a city tour by bicycle (see tour #2).

One of Melbourne’s attractions lies in the fact that most of the interesting sites are close together, mostly within the CBD (Central Business District) which covers an area of approximately 1 kilometre by 2.5 kilometres. The very centre lends itself to be discovered on foot, however, a lot more of the city can be seen by bicycle. Melbourne is the ideal city for bicycles. It has wide streets with many cycle tracks, no mountains, a very bike-friendly city administration and weather always above freezing and with relatively little rain.
There is no time for boredom during the tour because we will be constantly surrounded by interesting sites. The majority of the route is on defined bike tracks or away from car traffic thereby avoiding conflict and traffic congestion. Among the attractions we will see during our tour are the Flinders Street Railway Station, Federation Square, Princess Bridge, the two greatest cathedrals of Victoria, a majestic boulevard, the Shrine of Remembrance, the Royal Botanical Gardens, a trip along the Yarra, Southbank, Docklands, Queen Victoria Market (if open, it is closed on Monday and Wednesday), terrace houses in Carlton, the Royal Exhibition Building, Fitzroy Garden, Cooks Cottage, a conservatory and the sporting facilities like the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Tennis Centre. On our way we have a coffee break (included in price). You will be delighted by the beauty of Melbourne.
At the beginning of the tour you will be given a bicycle, a bike helmet, which must be worn since it is compulsory in Australia, a map of the city and additional material if you wish. The time for the start of the tour depends on you, since you will probably be bound by various pre-booked travel arrangements. The starting location will be ideally in the city or somewhere in the CBD depending on you.
I also offer a tour to discover Melbourne on foot. Both tours complement each other. For details see the tour titled “Melbourne city tour on foot and public transport”. If the weather were unsuitable for bike riding, you would have the option to swap it with the tour on foot, where we would be less exposed to the weather.
