Guided tour #2: Aix en Provence - Marseille

Duration : 1 day
Level : easy Easy
Discover two cities, so close to each other but so different.

During the morning : guided tour of Aix en Provence.
The old capital of Provence has kept a great deal of the character imparted to it in the XVIIth and XVIIIth. The sober elegance of its mansions, the graceful charm of its squares, the majesty of its avenues and loveliness and its fountains are impressive.

You will love to stroll through the heart of the town, in the pedestrian old streets to discover the façades of the baroque ochre coloured private mansions. These dwellings were built for the nobility, each with a concept and style corresponding to the residents' social importance.
The city also boasts a wide variety of fountains. Aix is the ''city of water, city of art''.
Among other buildings of interest : the cathedral, the town hall, the Corn Exchange
Why not having a coffee at the terrace of one of the numerous cafes.
Why not tasting a calisson cake with it, freshly made with almond pasta before continuing your visit in the narrow streets, full of tiny boutiques.

Possible shopping
(full market on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday)

Wide range of restaurants and snacks

For the afternoon : sightseeing tour of Marseille

France's premier port and oldest major city is in a surprisingly attractive setting, centred on the Vieux Port (the old harbour). People have leaved here for 26 centuries, its mixture of cultures being so varied that Alexander Dumas called it ''the meeting place of the entire world''

This tour gives you the chance to discover several faces of the second-largest city in France :

- View on the ''Vieux Port''. All streets lead to this place, where visitors tend to congregate. In this creek where the Phocaeans landed in 600 BC, now we can see thousands of yachts and pleasure boats
- Stroll in the old area named ''Panier'', stopping in front the Old Charity, a former hospice composed of beautiful three-tiered arched balconies surrounding the lovely domed Chapel in the center
- View on the huge and sumptuous XIXth century cathedral
- Splendid panorama from the highest point of the city, to take time to admire the unique site on which the city was built
- Visit of the basilica Notre Dame de la Garde, overlooking the city, presided over by a golden Madonna on a 150 ft bell tower. Its inside decoration made of mosaics and unusual votive offerings will impress you
- Corniche : picturesque road cut into the cliff and following the coast for more than 3 miles. It offers wonderful sights on the Frioul Islands, among which the Château d'If Island, that served as the setting place for Alexander Dumas, writing the story of the count of Monte Cristo
- Colourful fishing village of Vallon des Auffes, one of the most characteristic places in Marseille
- St Victor Basilica

Guided tour #3: AVIGNON - SAINT REMY - LES BAUX

Duration : 1 day
Level : easy Easy
This tour gives you the opportunity to plunge into Provence history : from the roman epoch to the medieval times.

Visit of Avignon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

The city, as a strategic site in the Rhone valley, owes its origins to the Doms rock. With the arrival of the popes in the 14th Century, the city became a second Rome. It was enriched by art in the 17th and 18th Centuries, and it remained papal property up to the French revolution. Its medieval walls cover nearly 3 miles and are punctuated by 39 towers and seven gates ! Within the walls thrives a culturally rich city.

The major site of the city is the huge pope's palace, the biggest gothic palace in the world. Just being at the foot of the impressive building will let you an unforgettable souvenir. It gives an idea of the grand life under the seven French popes who built a miniature Vatican during their rule here. You can visit 25 rooms of it, including the ceremonial rooms, chapels, cloister, private papal apartments with priceless frescoes, and others. (entrance not included)

The second point of interest is the St Bénezet bridge. This legendary bridge is a significant symbol of the history of Avignon, famous throughout the world due to the beloved children's song. The bridge was built in the late 1100's. Though it was often rebuilt after damage inflicted by the raging flood waters of the Rhone. (entrance not included)

Lunch on your own

Saint Rémy de Provence : This little town located at the bottom of the Alpilles chain and at the edges of the prosperous agricultural region of Chateaurenard is a very pleasant place to stop. Its streets display charming 16th and 17th century mansions.

One of its interesting site is the Clinique Saint Paul where stood the painter Van Gogh, in may 1889 after he had mutilated his ear. We still can recognize places around that he represented in his paintings. (entrance to the clinic not included)

The other point of visit is a fabulous testimony of the roman epoch. A triumphal arch and a mausoleum still stand proudly at the entrance of the former Greco-roman town. These two masterpieces are considered as one of the roman buildings best preserved.

Les Baux de Provence : «No one passes through Les Baux without a sense of true nostalgia, for here, more than anywhere else, the labours of time show what becomes of the most ambitious undertakings: ruined walls and breaches onto the void. The stones of man’s proud constructions devoured by the sun and wind. Only traces remain of their ambition, fears and solitude»
(T.Fréchier)

The village is situated in a wonderful and very picturesque site, in the heart of the Alpilles, perched on a rocky spur 245m high.
Entering in the village is a real experience because, despite the great number of visitors, it seems that the atmosphere is the same than 4 centuries ago. Its cultural heritage is exceptionally rich, with 22 architectural treasures classified as ''Historic Monuments'' (including the church, chateau, town-hall, hospital, chapels, houses, doorways... Also from the look-out points you will have a brilliant view of the Camargue and the Alpilles.
Overlooking the village, stands the ruined fortress than can be visited (entrance not included)

Between the sites, your driver-guide will explain you many things about the history, the tradition, the natural environment...
You will be able to stop as much as you want to take pictures, or just to breath the fabulous scents of the provencal plants...

Guided tour #4: LUBERON HILLTOP VILLAGES

Duration : 1 day
Luberon is the name of this magic mountain range, famous world wide, enriched by its stones, its castles, its luminosity and colours....
This is the real Provence, full of character.

A sweet dolce vita of a climate and pure clean air which just breathes the incredible contrasts between a rich, and variable natural environment : the blue strides of lavender, the subtle nuances of green in the forests, the flamboyant and blinding colours of the cliffs of ochre, or the austere white of the limestone hills.
It is the place of choice for many artists (painters, sculptors, writers, singers...)

Mostly on the northern part, on the side of the hills, several picturesque villages are perched, overlooking the valley. In order to protect themselves from pillagers, the inhabitants, during centuries, have patiently built, stone by stone, their houses, closed to the seigniorial castle.

Nowadays this charming villages, with their tiny narrow streets and amazing shaded squares are classified among the most beautiful ones in France.
Nevertheless, each one has its own personality and its own attractive power.

Lourmarin : It nestles in the middle of vineyards, olive groves and almond trees. A very animated village in the summer due to its numerous cafe terraces, restaurants and boutiques.
You can admire its medieval / renaissance castle, its temple, its interesting pigeon house, its provencal bastides, its ''boîte à sel'' belfry...
Albert Camus, winner of the Nobel Literature Prize, lived and wrote here and was even buried here.

Bonnieux : this large, attractively-terraced village situated on a promontory offers a lovely view of Calavon valley, from the hilltop village of Lacoste, which castle was formerly occupied by the Marquis de Sade, to the edges of the Vaucluse Plateau.

View on a roman bridge along the way

Roussillon : It owes its name to the reddish (roux) colour of its houses. The village is lovely from the outside, set in a deep green pine forest on bright red-ochre hills but even more spectacular inside, with the colourful old buildings and narrow medieval streets. From the terrace the view on the ochre cliffs, composed of 16 or 17 different shades is spectacular.
You can also go for a walk following the ''Giants' Causeway, among jagged rust-red cliffs, relieved by a scattering of pines and evergreen oaks.

It is a wonderful place to have a lunch : this touristic village offers a wide variety of restaurants.

Gordes - Panorama : This very beautiful old village is perched on the southern edge of the high Plateau de Vaucluse. It seems to be an unbelievable ''stone cascade'' : the stone houses are built in tight against the base of the cliffs and others are perched on the rocks above, and all together are topped by a 12th-century castle.

Between the sites, your driver-guide will explain you many things about the history, the tradition, the natural environment...
You will be able to stop as much as you want to take pictures, or just to breath the fabulous scents of the provencal plants...
