Guided tour #3: Macerata for Opera Lovers

Duration : 5 hours
Level : easy Easy
Guided tour of the historical centre of Macerata, highlighted by a visit to the famous ‘Sferisterio’, originally built in the early 19th century as a sports arena to bolster a local game called ‘pallone col bracciale.’ The Sferisterio is now home to the Summer Opera Festival.

Italy is the birthplace of Opera. There are disputes about its origin – some say the first stage acting accompanied by music occurred in Italy in religious plays, in the middle of the sixteenth century.
From this dramatic music, then the baroque appeared first, and approximately 200 years later, the romantic.
In the 19th century, Italy gave birth to some of the world’s most important and beloved opera composers such as Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini.
Along with these immortal composers, great opera houses were constructed and lavishly decorated.
In the last century, Italy continued its long-standing love affair with the opera even during the summer months with a wide assortment of opera and musical festivals.
Opera spread around the world as a form of entertainment and lifting of the spirit, but nowhere it is more vital than in Italy.
