Guided tour #3: Westerplatte - The First Battle of World War Two

Duration : 1 day
Level : medium Medium
There are only a few exceptional places so important for the history of mankind. One of such places is Westerplatte Peninsula where a Polish Military Transit Depot on a territory of the Free City of Danzig (now Gdansk) was made by the League of Nations. The Polish garrison was seperated from the city by the harbour channel. In case of war, the defenders were supposed to withstand a sustained attack for 12 hours. Here in September 1939, a small Polish crew ( 205 soldiers and civilians in total ), insufficiently armed, used to defend the attacts of the German forces ( 2.500 soldiers) from land, water and air for 7 long days.
The shot from Schleswig Holstein, a German battleship started the most tragic episode in the history of the 20th century - World War II.
This historical battle was the first and longest battles of the Invasion of Poland in 1939 , nowadays, it is a symbol of human courage and determination. The tour lasts up to 4 hours. You can get to the Westerplatte Peninsula by car throughout the year and from June to September also by sea. One-hour cruise aboard the replica of the XVII-th century galeon is really enjoyable in summer .
As soon as the car is parked we can start visiting. There is a nicely prepared historical outdoor exhibition which illustrates the history of this place as a popular resort in the past as well as a military project developed for ages. You will see the historical battlefield area, the watch guards, New Barracks , cemetary, symbolical memorial and learn about the Preservation Society. You will also see the battle maps, armaments used, learn about the temporary Stutthof Camp made in this place, casualties, the fate of its defenders during the WW2 and after the war. You can take dozens of interesting photos during our tour.

Note: Cruise passengers arriving in Gdynia Harbour should add extra 1-1,5 hour. While driving to Westerplatte, you will see the historical Main Town

Guided tour #5: Malbork Castle - for photography lovers and/or history buffs

Duration : 1 day
Level : medium Medium
This Castle was built by the Teutonic Order which named it Marienburg, literally ''Mary's Castle''. The castle is a classic example of a medieval fortress, and is the world's largest brick gothic castle. UNESCO listed the castle and its museum as World Heritage Sites in 1997. The castle was expanded several times to host the growing number of Knights, and became the largest fortified Gothic building in Europe, featuring several sections and walls. It consists of three separate sections - the High, Middle and Lower Castles, separated by multiple dry moats and towers. It once housed approx. 3000 ''brothers in arms'', and the outermost castle walls enclose 52 acres, four times larger than the enclosed space of Windsor Castle.

Both castle exterior and interior are just fascinating. Interior courtyards, gates, dry moats, wells, castle treasury, reconstructed mill and much, much more to see.
The dormitory, dining rooms, kitchen, castle treasury, Malbork's armory - you need at least 2 hours to catch the spirit of this place. Night visit-upon the request.
On the way to the castle you will see the remnants of villages, dams and architecture made by Mennonites.

Note: there is also an option, on the return way to Gdansk, to combine the Teutonic Castle with a short visit to the former Concentration Camp at Stutthof or arrange sightseeing of Gdansk.

Guided tour #6: Stutthof Camp tour

Duration : 1 day
Level : medium Medium
Stutthof was the first concentration camp built by the Nazi Germany regime outside of Germany. Completed on September 2, 1939, it was located in a secluded, wet, and wooded area west of the small town of Sztutowo. The town is located in the former territory of the Free City of Danzig, 34 km east of Gdańsk. Stutthof was the last camp liberated by the Allies, on May 9, 1945. The Camp was the place where an estimated 85 000 inmates from 25 countries were exterminated during WWII. The death rates were extremely high from malnutrition, typhus and exhaustion. The traumatic exhibition shows the record of human suffering.
We will drive you to Sztutowo, the place where the former Nazi Camp was made, taking the shortest way. In summertime we can take a short ferry crossing and pass by fishing villages which become popular seaside resorts in summer time.

You need about two hours to do the sightseeing of the camp and watch 2 documentary movies. The museum gives testimony to the martyrdom of Poles, Jews and people of 30 other nationalities kept in this camp. The visitor trail leads to the Death Gate, huts of the Old and New Camp, the gas chamber, the crematorium , watch towers and a symbolical Memorial with a reliquiary at the back of the monument. On the way back, we can stop and do a sightseeing of Gdansk major highlights or combine it with the Gdansk Jewish Heritage trail.
