Lisbon Guide
To travel is to learn so I would like to be your ambassador during some hours or days in Lisbon and to contribute to your knowledge about Portugal. I can show you the highlights of Lisbon like the Tower of Belem and the Jeronimos Monastery – both world heritage, the Cathedral, S. Roque church, the Tile and Coach Museum and the romantic Sintra as well as the summer resort Cascais in the surroundings of Lisbon. I´m glad to explain about the gastronomy, economy, among other details that only an official local tour guide can do. Lisbon is a town with a peculiar physiognomy with its 7 hills so is the perfect town for a nice walking tour. Where to go? What to visit? Where to eat? I am here to help you!!!

One of the most beautiful districts of Lisbon is Belem. Located 7 km from down town has 2 monuments protected by Unesco, lots of history to tell and a nice fresh atmosphere at the river.
After leaving the hotel we take the tram 15 along the river and near the Tower of Belem is where we start our walking tour. The symbol of Lisbon is an original fortress from 1520. The Monument of the Discoveries with the statue of Prince Henry the Navigator remind us that Portugal experimented an epic odyssey in the 15. and 16. century. But the best example of this glory is the unique monastery of Jeronimos. We visit the church of our Lady of Belem and the cloister (the entrece ticket in the cloister is not included). To finish this walking tour I suggest you a taste of “Portuguese custard tarts'' or ''pasteis de nata.'' – the neighborhoods specialty. One is never enough!!

The elevator da Bica inaugurated in 1892 was used by workers and fishing women from the Ribeira Market. With 283 meters long it will drive us until the Bairro Alto (upper town) the favorite quarter for night life, being the Largo do Camões the meeting point among the locals to begin the night program. The next photo stop for one of the best view over down town will be at the Elevador Santa Justa, this one a real vertical elevator! We continue passing by the nice belvedere S. Pedro de Alcantâra before going down with the Elevator da Gloria. Since our marry- go- round tour is not yet over we are going to get our last and the oldest Cable car da Lavra inaugurated in 1884. On your way to the down town we will pass by the houses of Amália and Camões both well known inhabitants of Lisbon.

I can pick you up at the hotel or in down town but the Martim Moniz Square is the starting point of our walking tour. Since you are still fresh we will climb 5 flights of stairs so we can leave the cosmopolitan city center to go back in time and experience the atmosphere of the middle age. Here you´ll see old churches, the Beco da Achada with probably the oldest house in Lisbon, the Castle of S. George (entrance fee not included). The view from S. Lucia´s terrace is a must but what is expecting us is even better because Alfama is a unique quarter, like a real labyrinth, with lots of steeps, narrow streets and blind alleys in each corner! A visit of the Cathedral. The oldest church in town built in 1147 is the symbol of Christianity. Going down the river we stop for a photo in the House of the Pointed Stones.

To go to the first Miradouro you need to take the famous tram 28 (the tram ticket is not included). Lots of Portuguese consider the best view over Lisbon from Miradouro Nª Sra Monte and a little lower we´ll have another superb view from Miradouro da Graça. Walking down the neighborhood we reach the Sta Luzia´s belvedere laying on the top of the oldest quarter of Lisbon - Alfama. Here we are back in the past in a kind of Medina with old buildings, wrought iron balconies, narrow streets, steps, blind alleys. One last photo stop at the terrace of S. Estevão Church. Going along the river Tagus we leave Lisbon from the Middle Age and in a couple of minutes later we are in down town in a totally different structure and atmosphere from the 18th century. We can end our tour taking a fresh drink in one of the brand new restaurants and bars in the beautiful Commerce Square.

In this tour we can walk the whole time or we can use the public elevators of Lisbon depending if you have the daily ticket or not. We start in the Restauradores Square at the end (or beginning) of the Liberdade Avenue with a very romantic atmosphere, going up the hill until our first viewpoint – the S. Pedro de Alcântara. From here you´ll see the modern Lisbon, the Castle of S. George, down town, the river Tagus, the other river bank… After zigzagging in Bairro Alto the center of Lisbon´s night life, we lead us to Carmo Square, an historical, cozy square with lots of jacaranda trees and the ruins of the Carmo Convent as background. Behind it we stop for a photo to enjoy the view from the Elevador Sta Justa. Next stop will be the Largo do Camões reminding us the best Portuguese writer and soon we´ll reach the Sta Catarina´s terrace. Here you can sit down at the kiosk, relax und prepare you camera for shooting the river, the statue of Christ and the old bridge.
