We (family of 3) spent a week with Anas travelling from Damascus to Palmyra, Homs, Hamah, Crak de Chevalier, Aleppo and back again. We also made impromptu visits to sites that we only saw from the road. Anas was the highlight of our trip. He gave us a great introduction to Syrian culture, customs and cuisine spiced with a charming sense of humor. We had long discussions with him on lots of sensitive topics such as how Syria is viewed in the world, the role of women, and in particular we talked about Islam. If we had been travelling by ourselves or with a driver/guide less open minded and generous we would never have gained the insights and understood what was going on around us as we did with Anas...that's what made the trip so fascinating, learning about Syria.
And by the way, he's also an excellent driver and considerately adapts his driving style to Western standards.
